I recently completed a custom jumbo guitar with cutaway. The back and sides are East Indian Rosewood back and the top is Engelmann Spruce. Special features include an elevated fingerboard, handmade rope purfling and a herringbone rosette and a 5 piece neck (mahogany-rosewood-mahogany-rosewood-mahogany).
The unique headstock was designed in collaboration with the customer. The customer also requested a custom decal on the headstock – ‘Skin For A Canvas’ is his stage name.
The construction of this guitar was quite a journey. The customer had a load of ideas and there was a lot of collaboration between us to make sure he was getting his dream guitar. The handmade herringbone took a long time but it was totally worth it – I’m really pleased with how the herringbone and abalone rosette turned out.
This is the first guitar I’ve made that has had an elevated fingerboard and I’ve gotta say it’s a great concept – the playability is so comfortable and the higher frets are much more accessible. In combination with the cutaway shape, it’s a dream combination for players who want to use the whole length of the fingerboard.
It’s great to see the guitar’s new owner already gigging and getting joy out his custom build.
